GRUPPO DI PALINOLOGIA DELLA SOCIETA' BOTANICA ITALIANA

The Gruppo di Palinologia della Società Botanica Italiana (GPSBI) was established in 1967 by Italian palynologists as a working group of the Società Botanica Italiana (SBI). The historical botanical Italian society was founded in Florence in 1888, originating from the Società Botanica Fiorentina, which was the first association of this type in Europe, dating back to 1716.
GPSBI is one of the original affiliate societies to the former ICP (International Commission for Palynology), constituted in Lucknow (India) in 1980, and changed in IFPS in 1984.
The executive council of the group composed by a coordinator, a secretary and three councillors is renewed and elected every three years by the effective members of SBI during the national congress of the Society. The group admits also palynologists not affiliated to SBI.
The activities of the group comprehend one or two annual meetings organized either as technical sessions on specific aspects of palynology, or as small thematic conferences. Every year an updating course on aerobiology is organized, jointly with AIA (Associazione Italiana di Aerobiologia) by colleagues of Perugia university. Particular attention is also paid to teaching of palynology in the universities. The group produced also a price list for palynological analyses.
In the last years, scientific meetings of the group were held at Modena and Florence universities, focussing on new aspects of palynological research. The presented results have been gathered in thematic issues of national reviews. The two last meetings took place in Rome, respectively on September 11th 2007 (technical meeting on “Forensic Palynology”) and on December 17th and 18th 2007 (thematic conference on the state of the art of “Palynology and Palaeobotany research in Italy from the late Pliocene to the middle Pleistocene”) and were attended by many tens of members and colleagues. Proceedings of the meetings are in publication in specialized reviews.
The Gruppo di Palinologia della Società Botanica Italiana (GPSBI) membership fluctuates, but is usually around 50. GPSBI welcomes members of the palynological community in Italy and elsewhere. Membership due is €5 per two-years.
