Introduction

Dear Members,
We are pleased to invite you to the 107th Congress of the Italian Botanical Society organised by the University of Sannio, to be held at the University St. Augustine Complex, Benevento from the 18th to the 21st of September 2012. The Congress will end on the 22nd of September with a floristic-cultural excursion to the Cipresseta of Fontegreca to the geo-paleontologic park of Pietraroja (Sannio Benevento).

We would like to underline that this will be the first time that the Institution, City and Province has hosted the Italian Botanical Society annual conference.

The University of Sannio is articulated on the Faculty of Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics and Natural Sciences, Economics and Business. It started as a branch of the University of Salerno, and acquired full teaching and administrative autonomy from the 1st of January 1998 (DM 29 / 12/1997) as University of Sannio in Benevento. In the national University scenario, the University of Sannio stands for a complex cultural project. This is characterized, on the one hand, by highly specialised training programs, as a site of national importance for specific disciplines and on the other, has a promotional role in the development of economic and social systems especially in the internal areas of Campania.

The choice of the establishment of the University structures (Rector, Administrative Department, Faculties, Libraries, Classrooms, Guesthouse, Cafeteria, Language Centre and Computer lab) according to the logic of a strong integration with the territory becomes, therefore, an unfailing step in the creation of the University-City system that summarises the best tradition of the Italian University and expresses, above all, high civic interest, designed to exploit all the potentialities existing in the area.

The Congress venue is the University Complex of St. Augustine. This venue, consisting of the Church of St. Augustine and the adjoining monastery, is located in the medieval Trescene District. The Church and the adjoining Augustinian monastery is estimated to have arisen around 1300 on a not yet discovered temple of Isis,
